Upper Endoscopy

Upper Endoscopy helps your doctor evaluate symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing. During the procedure, your doctor examines the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first portion of your small intestine). Upper endoscopy may also be referred to as Upper GI Endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).

An upper endoscopy involves the use of a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope that will view the inside of the body and project those images via a video monitor using its own lens and light source. This procedure can be used to obtain biopsies that help your doctor distinguish between benign (non cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tissues. Not all biopsies are taken for suspension of cancer, but also for bacteria that cause chronic ulcers.
